Part 1

Why do some perfumes and colognes cause headaches?

There are several very different reasons behind why some people will experience headaches when exposed to certain fragrances. It’s very unique to each person – what may cause one person a blistering migraine could be completely benign to the next.

Emotional Reasons

As the saying goes, humans are pretty much just houseplants with complicated emotions. A bit of time in the sun, plenty of water, and a stable environment makes up the basis of our happiness. Then comes the absolute chaos of our emotions.

Enter: Olfaction, or rather, our sense of smell. Smell is unique among our 5 senses because it is the only one with a hardwired link to our brain’s emotional and memory centers (the amygdala and hippocampus).

Unlike other senses that pass through the thalamus (the brain’s relay station), scent travels straight to the limbic system, giving us the ability to experience immediate emotional responses to scents, as well as vivid memory recall.

When you catch a whiff of something associated with a bad memory, like a cleaning product they use at your dentist’s office, or a would-rather-be-forgotten ex’s cologne, your brain can trigger a fight-or-flight response. This stress response causes your blood vessels to widen (vasodilation), to move more blood to your brain. As the blood vessels in your head and neck expand, they activate nearby pain receptors. This is what you feel as a headache.

So in some cases, your headache may not be a reaction to the scent itself or its ingredients, but a physical response to the emotional memory it carries for you.

Biological Reasons

Sinuses:

Certain compounds and chemicals can cause your sinuses to go into overdrive and become irritated. And just like with allergic responses, we all vary in how sensitive we are to the myriad of ingredients that can be in perfume. What might cause a complete meltdown for your sinuses may have no effect on the next person, and vice versa.

To flush out particles your sinuses find bothering, your body starts to produce excess mucus. This excess mucus then triggers an immune response, causing blood vessels to widen and tissues to swell (inflammation), and voila – you have a headache.

Nerves:

It can be the case that some chemicals skip sinus irritation and deeply offend the trigeminal nerve instead. This nerve is responsible for sensory signals in your head. When it detects chemicals it finds harsh, it treats them as a threat and signals for an immediate immune response. This rapid inflammation in the nerve pathway causes a direct – and often rather brutal – headache.

Other conditions that may be at play:

4 easy & effective strategies to greatly reduce your chance of getting a perfume/cologne headache

(and causing them for others)

1: Stick to lighter concentrations

Cologne and perfume with higher concentrated ingredients naturally can cause more headaches than lighter ones.

To play it extra safe, avoid fragrances with the following words in the name - these are likely to be higher concentrations:

2: If your scent arrives in the room five minutes before you do, you don't need a spray, you need a scrub

This really shouldn’t need to be said – but it does. Some people use cologne/perfume to hide body odour when they can’t be bothered to shower.

Fact: You’re not fooling anyone.

Fragrances can’t/won’t/don’t hide body odour. They simply layer on top of it for a sickly, thick, and very unpleasant effect. It’s the express lane to headache city both for you and everyone around you.

Some people go a step further in thinking they can simply apply a fragrance more liberally to achieve this. Hard nope again – the more you spray, the more repellent you’re likely becoming to others.

When wearing fragrances, your first layer is you. Always start with a clean and fresh base – aka good personal hygiene.

3. Try a more low-key application method

Instead of spraying your neck or chest (where the scent rises directly to your nose), spray the back of your knees or your ankles. You’ll get occasional wafts as you move rather than a constant bombardment.

Spray the air once and walk through the mist. This distributes the scent more evenly and lightly than a direct concentrated blast.

Apply your cologne or perfume to the hem of your pants/skirt/dress. It keeps the fragrance far from your face while still providing a great aura.

4. Choose the right notes

Certain fragrance families are notorious headache triggers. If you can identify your poison, you can avoid it. Common offenders include:
